THIS.

And if there IS more to it than that, the show hasn't bothered to portray that. I've heard that, "Oh, Castis are above gay/straight/etc, they'll sleep with whomever"... Yeah, maybe so, but all they've shown is two hot women sleeping together, which hardly seems revolutionary given how often women being intimate with each other is a popular straight male fantasy and most media is still made by straight men. Not to mention that Stahma was doing it for political reasons and Kenya was getting paid, so it wasn't a relationship about love or even just sex, it was about power and money.

TL;DR: I'm really not feeling the whole "sexually liberated" thing from them, yet.

Personally, I think Datak's treatment of Ulysses's lover as literally untouchable is probably a good sign of his homophobia.

SPOILER: And we probably know (as of this week) that Stahma was playing Kenya as a way to ratfuck the election, possibly with Datak's permission, almost certainly with an exit strategy given how adept she is at redirecting her husband and son.

Yeah. So... not exactly a sign of sexual liberation or "we're cool with sleeping with whomever", is it?

Stahma was playing Kenya as a way to ratfuck the election

Yeah. I mentioned Stahma's sleeping with Kenya just being a political ploy.

Oh yeah, I agree that Castis are probably not free-love guys. Then there was that whole "What are you doing in the bath, without me?" scene with all that implies.

The whole thing with Ulysses's lover becomes even more sinister when you realize that Datak had no problem personally cutting a deserter's throat in front of the Peacekeeper's office, pulling knives on Rafe, getting into a brawl with Nolan, and went into a rage pummeling a dying Irathi with his bare fists. For him to get squeamish about touching a man in a same-sex relationship suggests that there's a taboo there a bit stronger than Datak's desire to be the biggest thug in the town.

A society can be sexually liberated and still be sexist though.

Castithan society, from what we have seen, places less/no taboo on sex (to the point where a father and a daughter would feel comfortable discussing the wedding night), are cool with dating whichever gender one might wish, open about nudity and what not. So yeah, taking all those things? Pretty sexually liberated.

Also still sexist as fuck for a bunch of things you mentioned. It can be both.

This.

I kinda agree, with a key difference being that I don't think their morals are at all human. As we've seen, Stahma Tarr is the series's Lady Macbeth, except that she's never going to have her "out, damned spot" moment. Instead, she'll just smile, nod her head and thank the human in the scene for noticing just how ruthless she is.

Yup. Castithan wives seem to have subservient roles in their culture. Stahma is so powerful, because she knows how to play the game. She does that by placating her husbands ego and whispering in Datak's ear.

I think they don't have nudity hangups like humans however.

Just fyi, not every human culture has the same nudity taboos.

Yes, I know that. It was a generalized statement. Apologies.

[Picture is Datak and Stahma Tarr, husband and wife from the TV series "Defiance". They are both human looking aliens with platinum blonde/white hair, pale skin and pale irises.]

I hate it when fans describe Castithan society as very sexually liberated compared to humans. Yes, their morals might be a bit different, but what I see is a highly patriarchal system where it's tolerated that men sleep around, but women have to make sure not to disgrace their families. Sure, some women (like Stahma) manage to gain power within that system, but that doesn't mean the system itself isn't sexist.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think people confuse highly sexual with sexually liberated, in this case.

This is such a stupid, sexist fanboy wankoff of a show anyway, I just can't bring myself to care. It is what it is. And the boys love it.

Okay so the society where the brides have to be blind for half the ceremony, where a Casti married woman is considered to be SHOCKING if she bathes alone, and where the men have a double standard where it's okay for them to pork around but not the married women? LIBERATED?

Tell me these fans you speak of are from Tumblr, aka Bizarro World

I can't really say there isn't an abundance of proof that Castithan society has all kinds of fun (ick) little sexual prejudices, nor that it isn't sexist, but if this secret is specifically referencing what Stahma told Kenya, I have to point out that most to all of that is suspect. Stahma was telling Kenya what she thought would get the result she wanted, not necessarily what was true. Also not necessarily lies.

Though, going by Stahma and Datak's behavior otherwise, it seems like it might mostly be true.
