What do you consider qualifies as emotional abuse in fiction?

Because the standards in fiction, especially in comedies and sci-fi/fantasy, are a lot more blurry than real life. So what kind of stuff crosses the line in your opinion?

Only when it is deliberate and someone cries. It has to be both. In fiction.

I don't know about the gold standard, but anything that comes off as emotional gaslighting -- a character continually insisting that another character is imagining things, or isn't "allowed"/"shouldn't" feel certain emotions which, to the reader, are natural or justified -- tips me off, especially if it's clearly intentional on the part of the abuser or a pattern in their relationship. Otherwise, just general manipulative behaviour or bullying.

Either a) intentional manipulation that actually works or b) creating a persistent (i.e., not because someone is in a particularly bad mood for a specific reason for a short time) situation where the victim lives in a state of fear and uncertainty where they feel the need to avoid making the abuser mad to be safe.

These are just the "yes, absolutely abuse" parts. Like, some situations can still be abusive even if they don't qualify for a) or b), but any situation that qualifies for a) or b) is abusive, IMO.

This, though I'd add that the abuser persistently goes out of their way to make the victim feel like crap/destroy their mood/confidence/whatever.

I agree with this, and with the reply above, and I'd also add that the abuser goes out of their way to make the victim feel powerless.
