It is 95 degrees and my air conditioner is dying.

What do you guys do to beat the heat?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Stay hydrated. Stay indoors. Move to a colder climate.

Worked for me anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss the heat...

but what I would usually do when I lived in places where it got hot is, wear light clothing, stay in the shade, get some kind of a breeze going some way, drink lots and lots of cool liquids, and avoid physical movement as much as humanly possible

Open the windows, turn on the fans, and make an ice pack to put on the back of my neck.

Cold cloths on your neck. Wash your hands up to your elbows and let them air dry. Wet your face with cold water. Keep your blinds and curtains closed, open them only at night once the temperatures have dropped. Drink water, shower. Eat ice-cream and salads. Good luck!

The issue is that I only have blinds, and I have windows on two sides. So I get sun for a good portion of the day.

DA

Open the windows and let air circulate. It helps a *lot* more than it sounds [believe me, I live in an area that gets 98+ degrees in the summer and used to not have AC.]

Are you allowed to make a few holes? You can get a cheapie curtain rod (about $1, depending on the size you need) from Walmart if you're in the US - the screws go right in with a regular screwdriver. Strong double-sided adhesive would probably work as well if you don't have creatures likely to tug on the curtains. If you can spare the money for thermal-backed blackout curtains (about $15, give or take, if they're not on sale), I really do recommend it, but really anything will help.

Where are you finding ones for $15? The ones I'm seeing on Amazon are at least 40.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Walmart o_o Says they're cheapest ones are ~$10 (I found some on sale in-store for $7), though obviously bigger ones are gonna be more. I'm talking about the thermal-backed ones, not fully thermal (there's a difference). They're called energy efficient blackout curtains on Walmart's site.

Will check it out. There is no Wallmart near me, but maybe I can find a ride.

Close your blinds anyway, and cover any windows with a blanket or doubled sheet (if you can't afford curtains just now) and only open your windows that are on the 'shade' side.

Once a window is in the shade, put a fan in it and turn it on.

Cold, damp washcloth on the back of your neck.

Fans. Fans everywhere. Throw a towel in the freezer and curl up in it every so often. Ice packs (the soft-pack ones) on the back of your neck/under your tits/in your crotch (I'm not even joking - it'll cool you down). Being naked. Thermal blackout curtains/UV-blocking window films. Toss some ice in a ziplock, wrap in a towel, and curl up with it. Laptop off the skin. Water. Cold drinks. Cold food. Cold showers. Lights off. Wet a hand towel, freeze it, drape it over your head.

They only work for so long, but you can survive if you keep bouncing around from method to method.

Windows open, blinds shut. Rotate em to keep the sun off. Lots of drinks--anything 'refreshing'; pink lemonade works better than soda for me. Take a cool shower in the morning and you might need to take more during the day if you get too sweaty. Don't sit on anything leather without a blanket or something over it.

...These are practical tips, but frequently I end up lying on the linoleum floor in the kitchen playing video games with a can of juice/soda in reach at all times because damn does the heat sap my will to do much of anything.

My general "stay cool" steps:

1. fuck clothing. I refuse to wear that shit in the heat.
2. Point that fan directly at me awh yeah
3. Water. It used to be a squirt bottle of water id just spray on myself. Lately I've been using a tub of water to put my feet in. I have to keep adding ice cubes though.

Complain about it. It doesn't actually help any, but bad moods are made to be shared.

I have ice cubes inside me. I deeply regret this course of action.

I embrace the heat! (I live in the tropics)

Well, that and also going to my old swimming pool at the local golf course.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Cold drinks (mostly water) and more cold drinks. During the day I close my blinds but leave the window open so it's relatively not-hot when I get home.

Sit in front of a fan with a squirt-bottle of water. Squirt yourself in the face frequently.
