Too much attention is paid to dads in TV shows as a shortcut to give characters ongoing issues or motivations or problems or something. I don't mind it, but I do feel annoyed that mothers get the short end of the stick in these kinds of situations - they're usually cardboard benevolent supporters, jerks who command no respect, or dead.

So, FS, who are your favorite TV mothers?

Yes. I totally agree.

I liked Joyce up until she kicked Buffy out and then was mad at her for going, and proceeded to treat Buffy like a helpless child when she returned.

Claire Huxtable (The Cosby Show) and Peggy Bundy (Married with children).

Marge Simpson, Mallory Archer, and Lucille Bluth

Lucille is the best mom ever.

Endora.

Marion Cunningham from Happy Days. She stood by her man and made her home a real home.

Madoka's mom, Junko.

Aren't TV dads usually written as bungling, barely competent idiots who need a map to wipe their own ass and would get lost halfway across the taint anyway?

in sitcoms they often are, but in dramas and other types of shows they tend to be more developed than the mothers. that's not a rule of course

And yet they still tend to be more developed and written more complexly and more from their POV than the mothers, who are often little more than ciphers, albeit competent ones. And don't get me started on dramas.

Honestly, I'd prefer an incompetent bumbling mother who wasn't a closed book and who was written to be the sympathetic POV character rather than the straight man/butt of eye-rolling "lol them womenz are mysterious and make no sense, those poor hapless men, trying to understand the working of their nonsensical minds, yo* jokes. Must be why I still have a soft spot for I Love Lucy despite all the '50s dissonance.

Reba Hart, Melissa McCall, Maddie Weston, Lori Grimes, Kushina Uzumaki, Misaki Kurosaki, Kyoko Honda.

There is a sad lack of moms in media, and too many of the ones I listed here are dead. :(

Seconding Joyce and Morticia. Also, Evelyn Harper (Two and a Half Men) and Martha Rodgers (Castle), who I swear are each others' evil and good twins respectively.

Peggy Bundy, Roseanne Conner, and Sophia Petrillo.

Ellen Harvelle (Supernatural). That alternate universe episode where she was married to Bobby made me so angry with what should have been.

For actual fallible human characters: Lois (Malcolm in the Middle)

For pure awesome: Ellen Harvelle

For hilarity: Mallory Archer, Lucille Bluth

Seconding Lois and Lucille Bluth. Lois is an incredibly one-of-a-kind character for American domcoms with regard to her development and the way the narrative frames her, and Lucille is evil crosses-the-line-twice brilliance incarnate.

Morticia Addams and Reba Hart.
