He was Superman for literally TWO minutes when he had to tackle some hard core shit. Cut him a break. He'll find his bearings.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't pay fifteen dollars plus snacks to cut him slack, I paid to see Superman be a superhero not a douche.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
A douche? How was he a douche exactly?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I paid 8 dollars on Matinee and left the snacking at home. Pay less next time, maybe then the payoff won't need to be so huge for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
absolutely. because everyone should expect the SAME EXACT movie experience as you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, duh.

i didn't think this comment thread could get more annoying, gg

henry cavill also based of his superman on comics like 'death of superman' and 'superman returns' which are written when superman has been superman for a while.

he acts NOTHING like a new superhero, why is he so angsty and doubting humanity already? jfc superman is suppose to be humanity's greatest supporter and off the bat he doesn't believe in them already?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
He was treated like a freak when he was growing up - the whispers outside the school closet and the way Pete Ross' mom made it sound as if he'd actually done something WRONG by saving the bus and the bullying he had to put up with because he wouldn't fight back maybe? And all that time he had Kevin fucking Costner drumming into his head that he'd be killed or worse if anyone found out his secret and it was the worst thing ever for people to find out. So what happens the first time he appears as Superman? He has tanks pointed at him and he's handcuffed and turned over to the aliens. Even afterwards, they've got drones following him trying to find out where he 'hangs his cape'. Why exactly would he start off the bat as humanity's greatest supporter with those experiences under his belt? We have the Christopher Reeve films for that version of the character (and I adore him). I think it's great we've got some new things to delve into. I want to see a Superman who wasn't Superboy first, one who grows in his role rather than already knowing exactly what to do.

Sorry for the rant. But honestly, why go to a theater to see a retelling?

right, and i liked that they showed how clark kent's childhood wasn't as smooth as everyone thought it was, but it doesn't mean he didn't have good days. clark kent started off as humanity's greatest supporter because he grew up with loving parents and friends. he was never a loner, most of his friends are people with no superpowers/abilities. jonathan kent had a point, what if they world was afraid of his powers, but he never drilled that thought into his son's head. 50% of why clark kent became superman comes from martha/jonathan kent and now 'man of steel' just tore that part out.

the most beautiful thing about superman is that he becomes a superhero because he wants to, not because of some revenge or fight or a desire to do justice to the world (his father wasn't mobbed/parents weren't killed/wasn't trained as a fighter/didn't have duty thrust upon him). he does it because he simply can and that's what he wants to do. it is what makes superman an ideal superhero because he has no agenda. does superman does things that are morally ambiguous? sure he does, but not when he starts out.

he doesn't need to have become superboy before, this could be the first time he put on the suit but he cannot start out being superman with so much rage, because it defeats the characterization of him.

i don't need a retelling, i just have problems with the characterization. which also questions the entire movie, why make an origins movie at all? everyone and their grandparents know how clark kent became superman. and it sucks because every superhero movie that is coming out has the exact same plot- how superheroes become superheroes, it's getting really old and pointless. superman saves people, why in the world didn't he go fight zod in space/more remote part of new york city? the problem isn't the amount of destruction but how he handled it. if a city was in ruins, you damn well know superman would not go and ruin that city some more. also the drone trying to find where he lives was obviously done out of humour and not actual plot.

/that was longer than expected. also i just really wanted a 'man for all seasons' feel if they did an origins movie for sups.

i don't need a retelling,

Why do we always need an obligatory retelling of the origin story? Is there anyone on the planet who does not know who Superman (or Batman) is? Just start with him in the cape and tights and go from there. I guess re-telling is great for behind the camera guys who love the mythology of characters, but it is just boring to watch yet another wangsty re-cap of information we already know with a slightly different detail in it.

If they are going to do a re-telling and origin story then they should go all in like Superman: Red Son or True Brit, or Batman: Holy Terror. Justify the retelling by making it very different. Of course that would mean taking a risk and we know that Hollywood would never do that.

i dont think it's the production crew so much as hollywood thinks everyone is stupid and doesn't know shit about comic books- and does take the genre seriously. hence we're left with the same movie each time. but since explosions are the new thing that racks in money, the're gonna keep making comic book movies because it's a free pass for endless violence/fighting/explosions. a lazy way of storytelling yet people forget that there are actually words on the page.

yup, that would be way more interesting but i doubt they're gonna be making superman: red son any time soon.
