i let kaidan die my second playthrough and i regretted it a lot because ashley bothers me. she's racist as hell, i mean i know she kinda improves (or stops talking about racist things at the very least) as the trilogy progress but there's plenty of valid reasons not to like her imo.

Garrus is far worse about his racism but the fandom eats him up with a spoon.

People not liking Ashley because she's racist I have no problem with. That's a legit reason for not liking the character. But the fandom complaining about it while basically giving another character a pass (oh, hey, and he also happens to be male) just pisses me off.

...Sorry for the drunk rambling. I'll go back to my drinking hole.

i've honestly never noticed garrus being racist; i've also never really brought him on any missions besides his plot-needed/personal ones. is it ambient banter or?

he's got this thing against krogans like pretty much every turian. i can't remember anything else off the top of my head.

though to be fair i see the other anon's point, which i failed to mention in my reply, since the fandom tends to worship garrus, but i don't think that's completely applicable in this comparison.

i think that's mostly because garrus is racist in the sense that most of the characters are racist. wrex is racist towards salarians and turians because of the genophage. garrus is racist towards krogans due to the spotty relationship they have with the turians. tali hates all geth (if that counts?). javik shits on everyone because he remembers their primitive roots and can't seem to get past it.

ashley just kinda distrusts and hates on all aliens of every sort simply for not being human, which is a lot shittier to me than garrus' racism, or anybody else's racism in the games. but that's just me

This, pretty much. And a lot of minor characters in the series don't seem fond of humans because they're still essentially a newcomer on the galactic stage. The volus ambassador seems especially sour in ME1 on humans knowing they'll get a seat on the Citadel Council far before his race.

But yes, xenophobia is apparent everywhere in Mass Effect including Shepard's squad and it's not limited to Ashley and Garrus. Ash does get better about it though, and you can tell her to stfu. Even Shepard him/herself can make some pretty xenophobic comments if you choose the right renegade ones.

Yes, all hate is pretty much rooted in people's history, Ashley hating on the Turians would have made sense, but why nearly every other alien species? What's her excuse to encourage genocide?

In Mass Effect 1 Ash says that she doesn't trust the Council races because they will always look after themselves before humanity with the whole bear and dog analogy.

In Mass Effect 3 when they go to the council for help with Earth the Asari counciler straight comes out and says that while the Reapers are focused on Earth it gives them time to sure up their own boarders.

Ash can say some pretty shitty things, but she was right about one thing

... You do realize you can get Ashley to soften her views on aliens if you, yanno, actually talk to her and choose Paragon options?

And if she was as racist as you say she is, then she wouldn't have readily volunteered to help Kirrahe on Virmire. Just saying.
