The Last Herald-Mage trilogy (Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, Magic's Price) is the one you're thinking of by Mercedes Lackey. There are also some minor gay characters in the Queen's Own trilogy (Arrows of the Queen, Arrow's Flight, Arrow's Fall).

Yes! That one. I suppose it's not horrible, but it has some unfortunate tropes that I'm tired of. I'd recommend it for the representation, but outside of that...eh.
