Oh my goodness I was talking about this just the other day. Here, let me throw my traditional rec list at you!

Outremer trilogy by Chaz Brenchley. Set in an alternative, magic-and-demon-filled version of the Crusades, a love triangle between a cursed acolyte, a knight of the church and a desert tribesman.

Swordspoint by Lynn Flewelling. Intrigue between duellists and nobles in a fantasy city.

Rain Wilds series by Robin Hobb. Woman leaves her asshole husband to study dragons. Also tagging along is her husband's secretary/secret boyfriend. Drama of the very best kind ensues.

Iron Council by China Mieville. Dark, beautifully-written steampunk about a group of government rebels.

Stone Dance of the Chameleon trilogy by Ricardo Pinto. As the anon who recced this before me said, it's slow in places and very violent in others, but the worldbuilding is spectacular.

Tales of the Five series by Diane Duane. Old-school fantasy about warriors of destiny fighting Dark Forces (warning - the last book in the series was never written, but the story does stop at a satisfying place).

Legends of the Red Sun series by Mark Charan Newton. An elite gay warrior tries to save his crappy homophobic society from plunging into an ice age and/or being destroyed by monsters from another world.

I was just about to recommend Swordspoint--but the author is Ellen Kushner, not Lynn Flewelling.

Also the two sequels--Privilege of the Sword and The Fall of the Kings.
