I recently had surgery because I didn't have enough gum tissue near my bottom teeth. For me, it wasn't too big a deal. They just used local anesthetic, took some tissue from the roof of my mouth, and grafted it to the gums. The most difficult part for me was having to eat relatively soft things for, like, a week (though part of why that was hard for me is because my diet is already limited). The pain was only bad for the first couple days. The surgery was about a month ago, and it still itches a little every once in a while, but that's all. Oh, and I've been going through mouthwash like crazy; I was supposed to use it 4-5 times a day for the first week.

It might be more difficult if you need more extensive grafts, though? idk
