It depends what kind of volunteering you're willing to do or able to do. Check out charities in your city/town/neighbourhood and ask. Volunteering can be serving soup to the homeless, handing out flyers for a charity, helping children with their homework, keeping company to patients in nursery homes...

Something the other anon forgot to mention is volunteering at your local animal shelter. When I was severely depressed in high school and required to do community work to stay in my societies, the animal shelter is what I did. They're always looking for help, and if you volunteer enough, you can slide right into a non-technical job there.

Plus, animals are proven to be therapeutic, and in my personal experience, they help enormously.

Personally I would choose a library. Shelving books for a couple of hours, couple of times a week. It'll give you experience in service because you'll probably have to interact with patrons, and good organizational skills. You might be able to go from volunteering, to working as a page, to working full time as a clerk? Getting the professional help you need for your depression in the meantime (if you are not already seeking it), and then maybe going back to school for a degree in library science? It helps me to view life as a path or a mountain and every little thing is a step towards getting to the end of the path or climbing the mountain. CHOOSE YOUR PATH.

A lot of hospitals have volunteers too, if you're looking for something with a 'different' type of volunteering.

At my hospital I think we have almost a thousand. They run messages, escort patients, deliver externally ordered flowers from the gift shop, and in my department (pharmacy) they help us with labeling of products/expiry checking etc.
