There ARE risk factors for gingivitis/periodontal disease (and it sounds like OP hit at least some of them), but sometimes, no matter how well you take care of your teeth, you'll still end up with it. Parent brushed/flossed/etc. regularly, and still ended up losing every tooth by 40. *shrug* Sometimes it's just wacky genetics.
