correct.

my alternative image for this secret was one of those ubiquitous Tumblr posts with "HERE ARE MY FANDOMS, FOLLOWERS = LOVE" and every single popular fucking thing on earth (Doctor Who Homestuck Supernatural Sherlock Teen Wolf Star Trek MLP Avengers Marvel DC Monsters University The Lorax Rise of the Guardians Disney Final Fantasy Mass Effect Fucking Everything Imaginable)

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So fucking what if they love every fucking thing under the sun?

What fucking business of yours is it?

What even qualifies as "too many" what qualifies as "knowing enough"? People like what they like, for whatever reason they like, while know how ever much they know about something. And if they're shallow as fuck about - WHO THE FUCK CARES?

People *get* to like things for shallow reasons. People get to pick up things and then drops them.

Just because you can't fucking handle fandom casually doesn't mean everyone else shares your deficiency.

Re: OP

OP

hit a nerve? if it's none of my business and people like what they like, why do you care what I think?

the literal only thing my secret said was: "I assume you don't know or care much about [your 198395785 fandoms] and will probably forget about them and I judge you."

how you're extrapolating a "deficiency" and an inability to "handle fandom casually" from that is beyond me - I would think someone without 198395785 fandoms and a new one every second is a pretty casual fan, as opposed to someone who jumps headfirst into every fandom that comes along.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You literally admitted to *judging* people based on how many fandoms they have. You're invested enough in judging people based on how many fandoms they have to make a secrete and post it to fandom secretes - presumably to let people know that you judge them (because honestly, what *else* would making a this secrete accomplish?). This interest in other peoples' fandom habits is not particularly indicative of casual fandom activity.

That's a deficiency. The fact that you can't just let people do their own thing without judging them. Or that you can't keep your judgement inside your own head. Just cuz you have an opinion doesn't mean you *have* to share it.

Also, you still haven't articulated what's *wrong* with quickly accumulating fandoms. Or what's wrong with only paying them a little attention.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, you accuse people of having too many fandoms *and* of dropping them "too quickly" (like there's some sort of mandatory minimum time requirement they have to meet, as opposed to "however long they feel like it").

How exactly does that work? If they were dropping fandoms so quickly they wouldn't be involved in that many, now would they.

OP

presumably to let people know that you judge them

not presumably - literally.

Or that you can't keep your judgement inside your own head. Just cuz you have an opinion doesn't mean you *have* to share it.

isn't that the entire point of this community? to share our opinions on fandom? secretly?

everything I wanted to say with this secret was already articulated in the secret. what's "wrong" is that it annoys me. I'm not sure why you're attempting to ~analyze~ this or turn it into an "accusation", like I'm up on Sinai with the Ten Commandments pointing at people here.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the community is to share secrets about fandom, but that doesn't mean that everything that pops into your head needs to end up here. Or that what you post here is exempt from criticism.

And I'm "accusing" you because you're a giant judgmental asshole. You put yourself up for that when you made this secret. What, you can make a secret all about how you judge people for how they enjoy fandoms, but people who call you out on being an asshole are in the wrong?

Why the fuck would it annoy you that someone else is involved in more than one fandom? How would that ever even affect you enough for it to bother you?

Or that what you post here is exempt from criticism.

THIS. I don't care if they post it; it's acting like other people aren't allowed to react after you put it out there...

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

how does responding to people's comments on my secret because I'm interested in the discussion = I'm exempt from criticism and no one is allowed to react? I'd think that means the exact opposite.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you keep replying to stuff with "Well you're the one replying to it!" like people *shouldn't* reply with negative opinions on your post.

You sound like a six year old.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You are very obviously NOT interested in discussion. You're interested in getting more replies and riling people up, but not discussion. Or you just really really really really fail at discussions.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

I am obviously and flagrantly an asshole, but this is still my opinion, and clearly this is an issue people on F!S have strong feelings about - look at these responses. I don't need to justify why I'm annoyed any more than you need to justify why you're this irritated by my secret.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Except, those things aren't the same.

I'm irritated with something insulting that you posted in public in a community dedicated to discussion.

You're irritated with how people enjoy their own hobbies.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
But maybe that's how they enjoy their hobby.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you're hobby is bothering other people about their hobbies, then you're an asshat and need to find a new hobby.

You're right to enjoy yourself how you please doesn't extend into asshat behavior.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hey OP, your opinion is never sacred. Especially when you're opinion shows what a judgmental prick you are over someone having fun.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the entire point of this community? to share our opinions on fandom? secretly?

Yup. It being secret means we don't know who you are. It being an opinion does not make it free from scorn. Opinions can be wrong. And people can hold opinions that make other people see them as jerks.

Judging all around.

Re: OP

...technically, opinions cannot be wrong, or else they wouldn't be opinions.

They can be unpopular, though. They can be in conflict with other opinions. And they can make you seem like an asshole to many people.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-08 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Opinions can be wrong if they are based around incorrect facts. Not every opinion is purely subjective.
diet_poison: (Default)

Re: OP

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-07-09 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The less subjective it is, the less it is defined as an opinion - or at least that is how I have seen it. I think I was using the word a bit too narrowly (see my response below).

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Many people are of the opinion that gay marriage destroys or will destroy the country.

That's a wrong opinion.

Many people are of the opinion that gay people *insert any judgement that is not "prefer romantic and sexual relations with people of the same gender"*. And those opinions are usually wrong. In nerd-circles, there are fanboys of the opinion that most girls, especially cosplaying girls are Fake Nerd Girls. That's their opinion. It is wrong.

It's very easy to have a wrong opinion. Being infallible isn't the definition of an opinion. An opinion is defined as: "A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof." By its very nature, it is a thing that can be wrong. And saying "well it's an opinion, it can't be wrong!" is just the laziest kind of defense.

But that's just my opinion.

Re: OP

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-07-09 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...I don't know if you thought that by making a philosophical assertion, I was trying to defend OP. I wasn't.

That's a very good point, but it seems it depends on how "opinion" is defined. I think I was defining it too narrowly - the examples you gave are things I would call beliefs (in this case, erroneous ones). I was talking about subjective judgments such as "these people who do X are annoying". They cannot be "wrong" because they're talking about someone's subjective reaction.

DA

People care because you're being an ASSHOLE about what people like, of course you're hitting a nerve! People are irritiated because it's none of your business and you're still shoving your judgmental nose in and telling people how to "do fandom".What the fuck does it matter if some people are in multiple fandoms, or like to watch lots of TV shows and be involved in things?

All I can see here is that you're a shallow idiot, more concerned with judging people for having fun than a person of any substance.
