You could say the same thing about cigarettes or alcohol (not to mention pretty much every other recreational drug out there) - peoples' taste buds vary wildly depending on genetics and diet.

Also, some brands taste better than others, and I'm sure you could mix them or chase them with something more appetizing. Cough syrup is a relatively cheap drug, considering; people make do to get their hit.

This is why purple drank exists. You mix the cough syrup with soda and candy to make it palatable.

But really it's not at all about the taste, it's about the high.
