Maybe focus on something smaller in scope, then? Not everything has to have an epic plot! If your assignment/requester mentioned liking a specific pairing, for example, you could write something fluffy and sweet.

I kinda have the same thing when writing my fanfic. I have so many ideas about what to do and how the characters interact, but I have no idea how the plot works.

In so far, the only thing that I can give you is this: http://iamawizard99.tumblr.com/post/36291848220/a-pep-talk-from-scott-westerfeld

It helped me for a while. Maybe it can help you.

That's the Gates of Hell in Tadjikistan, isn't it, Anon?! AWESOME. You have fabulous taste in weird places most people don't know about, regardless of your fandom angst. :)

Not the OP

I recognized it too! High five!

Sorry about the fandom problems, though, OP.

A bit late, but Turkmenistan, actually! I volunteered as a Peace Corps volunteer there, and seeing this made me squee because aaaah Gates of Hell! I've been there!

It was so awesome.

I hope you can figure it out, OP. But if you can't, you should really tell the mod of that exchange if you're dropping out. As someone who mods an exchange, I can tell you that there's nothing worse than people who never send in their fic and don't even have the decency to tell the mod about it in time.

It's been a week or so since you submitted this - please tell us how you're getting along! I've sometimes had exchange prompt batches that left me tearing my hair, but nevertheless turned to gold after I gave them some time & energy. I agree with the suggestion to not go for more scope than you need to; exchange fics can do great as just open-ended scenes or scenarios, without all the blanks filled in.

Figure out what the characters want and what (or who) is stopping them from getting it. That's usually Plot in a nutshell.

Good luck, anon.

[Picture is a collapsed cavern of a natural gas deposit in Turkmenistan, called "Door to Hell". It's a huge hole in the middle of the ground filled with fire, in a desert.]

I signed up for a fix exchange. I was so confident. Then I got my assignment. It's not a bad request. There are all the things I was excited to write in it but now I have no idea how to build a plot for it.

If there are number of interesting "pieces" .. but you don't have any idea how to cobble them together -- why not give yourself permission to do something non-liners or experimental? or even a "Five Times" thing. Or go the Rashomon route, a small event from multiple perspectives.

And just remember - yes, sometimes sculptors start out with a massive block of stone, visualize completely what they want to sculpt, and then chip away everything that doesn't fir their vision -- but if you've ever seen anyone sculpt a bust from clay, sometimes the creation is a process of accretion, lots of small bits gradually building up to something amazing.

You can do it!

P.S. Also echo the "Amazing picture" kudos.

Maybe consider keeping it simple and not psyching yourself out about it, OP. It's easy to bite off more than you can chew with an ambitious plot. Pick one or two ideas and see if you can make something of it.

But if you can't, I second the previous comment, please tell the moderator if you're not able to write the fic. It sucks so hard when people sign up and then pull a vanishing act.
