...I can't speak for Ramadan, but I can still remember the smell of my mother's macrobiotic lentil soup simmering away after we came back from services on Yom Kippur...

sa

Forgot to add, happy Ramadan! Is it just me, or are the holy days way, way, early this year? (Mine, are too, actually.)

Well, our Islamic lunar calendar kinda jumps backward about a few weeks every year due to having less days. It does make the holidays feel that they've come early, doesn't it?

On the plus side, sometimes the holidays fall in-between the Chinese New Year or Deepavali (or better yet, Thaipusam!) so that when it happens, there's a double celebration all around the country!! (2013 Malay trivia)

Wait, back to the main point! I've tried some Lentil Soup when my family and I went on a tour of Syria in late 2010. I remember dunking some bread into it and getting so full that I can't eat the main course!

On another note, Yom Kippur? I'm going out on a limb here and think you're Jewish? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just a little bit curious.

Judeo-Christian.

I was going to say, traditionally we have a big meal on the night of the Jewish Passover Seder, but we don't do the Seder itself (although we do the seven days of Passover). That sometimes offends people though, so I did not want to say. :-(

Ah, I read the Wikipedia article about it; I can see why some people would get up in arms over it.

Worse part is we don't take the "standard" beliefs from either Christian (trinity) or Jewish (Talmud) sides so. Yeah. I have been flambeed on mailing lists by both sides ahaha.

Don't worry. I think the conservative clerics of the Middle East and North Africa would be astounded by our cultural traditions throughout the whole year.

Some examples: Open houses where men and women openly mingle, not forcing our children to wear headscarves in public (my sister is kinda proud of that), acknowledging our multicultural heritage by allowing Hindus to spear themselves and the Chinese to build their temples...

I don't even want to know what the zealots think of us!

Edit: I can't find anything about Judeo-Christians in the Middle East, or anything about your specific culture. Sorry. :(

Way late in reply (I am waiting for the new post to go up ahaha) but if you have notifications turned on, you might get this message: The closest I can recommend would be Karaite, although there are a whole lot of different groups that call themselves that these days. Wiki gives a fairly good overview, minus the Christian part, of course.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karaite_Judaism

Add Bereshit to Torah, and that's us. Basically. Note I am NOT affiliated with any of the J4J groups those people are whackadoodledoo.
