what do you do?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)

When you really like a TV show and you want to give it views or something (it's airing now) but it's not released in your country? It's frustrating me horribly as, well, obviously I want to give it views so it has a chance of being renewed and I can't. I can't even view it on MTV because "MTV.com is designed for use within the USA so a lot of the site, including most of the videos, won't work for visitors from outside the country. You're welcome to come in and check it out, but for a better experience we recommend you visit your local MTV site."

ARGH let me give you views and attention!!!

DA - I think they're aware that they can download or stream it, but they want to actually contribute to the official viewer count in order to help it stay afloat.

I get that. But outside of a proxy -- which is typically slow and difficult to use -- I don't see what options the OP has, and watching TV online mostly does not count towards TV ratings anyway.

Re: what do you do?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That has nothing to do with OPs question or complaint. Torrents give zero attention or view counts to the source.

And neither do legal internet views.

OP

yeah that's what I'm doing right now, but as anon said I want to actually be in the viewer count? Granted I'm one person, but I'm sure there's others that wouldn't mind being a legal viewer ._.

I'm not sure if this would work, but is there any way to use a US-based proxy? (Somebody should probably reply and tell me if this is possible or if I'm just dumb.)

OP I've no idea, all my proxies seem to want to make me Swedish

Open proxy server website with US option.

Alternatively, if you are at all tech savvy, Tor.

You can't. They can't make any money off of you because you are not in their market, so your view doesn't matter.

Not that it would anyway -- most ratings systems are archaic at best and sometimes outright broken, and internet views simply aren't counted.

MTV's are, fwiw. Same with Nickelodeon, HBO and associated channels, Showtime and associated channels, and AMC.

Re: what do you do?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally depends on the network and the show. More and more are taking internet views into consideration these days.

Re: what do you do?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not even close to the truth anymore. ABC and CBS are the only nationwide channels that applies to these days.

Your knowledge about ratings systems is archaic.

It doesn't matter if internet views were counted. The OP is another country. The commercials shown on the internet shows are for a distinctive market. For example, let's say the commercials are for the US chain, Bubba's hardware store. How is Bubba going to make a buck off of someone outside the US? Views equal how much a network can charge for commercials. The larger the numbers, the more potential market, the more potential market, the more a network can charge for commercial time.

Echoing using a proxy server. You can view it on there on MTV will count you amongst the viewers on their website.

I'll have to give this a try if I can work it out. :/ There always seems to be a fuss over viewer count and if a show will be renewed or not. It'd be nice to help it out, however small (and watch a show we won't get for 5 years or so, if lucky XD)

Re: what do you do?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about all shows on MTV but the producer of Teen Wolf said during a con panel about using youtube counts to help gauge international interest. But he was just talking about Teen Wolf I think and I don't know if any of the other shows on MTV do that. So if you can't find another way to help with legal views, maybe watching on youtube will still help the network to know people are interested.

Well in my case, I discovered the producer's email address and sent him a Hari Raya (after-Ramadhan celebration) picture of the main character to express what I feel for the show.

He liked it and sent me a reply.

I dunno what show it is that you watch but I hope you can express what you think about it soon!

No matter what you do, it will not matter.

The thing is that television shows are not run by how good they are or even how many views they get, they are run by whom wants to put commercials during them, which is where viewing counts get accounted*, but if there is no advertisers whom want to advertise during a show it will get canceled, or more likely never aired. And if you are not in the country they advertise in they will not care.

This is the reason to why we always have so many Reality Shows, they cost next to nothing to make which means that the television channel gets basically free shows and earn more from ads.

Companies also usually sponsor the shows, like in Norway we have this show called 71 degrees North (which is basically people hiking to 71 degrees North) and they all use Bergans Gear (a clothing company, which I think is not sold that much outside of Norway?) and is basically just an excuse for Bergans to sell their clothes.

Studying Television is the easiest way to kill any part of you that wants to make something new and groundbreaking.

This is also why there is not a lot of Documentaries and Thought Provoking shows on most Television Channels, because whom wants to put ads in a show that shows dying children? "Aaand that was Emma aged 7 dying of cancer after this comercial we will see how she does... YOU WANNA BUY SOME CEREAL? IT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY AGAIN!!!" see that does not work...
*Though it has to be the right demographic and so on.
