DA - you can say that, but some things aren't so easily researchable. I mean, sure, if you're a bio or chem or engineering or whatever major, you can parse out things a little better than somebody who isn't in that field, but short of an in-depth discussion with an expert, some answers just aren't available so easily, and I'm not willing to devote intensive study to five different fields just to make sure that one aspect of my story/universe makes sense.

I think it's less important to be accurate and more important to be consistent. Because then at least you can fall back on "Magic A is Magic A" even if you do run into Somewhere a Scientist is Crying. Most of us unedumacated folks aren't going to give a damn if the science is a little off.
