There was decent fic in the PotC fandom back in the day, but iirc there was a LOT of ship wars. Specifically Will/Elizabeth and Jack/Elizabeth, with some slash (Jack/Will, Jack/Norrington, etc.) Can't recall much gen fic, from what I saw when I was active in the fandom. I don't have any particular recs featuring Jack, sorry.

it's so weird how the nature of fandom has changed so completely in the last 10 years. Slash was just a thing on the sidelines in most fandoms then.

Slash has always been around; I mean, look at Kirk/Spock, and how big that has been ever since Star Trek was on air. And maybe there was more slash in the fandom, but as a Will/Elizabeth person I only really got the terrible ship war side. It mostly depends on the fandom, I think.

Tell me about it. It was always there, but recently slash and shipping has totally taken over fandom and fanfic. I've seen fic writers who have written a good story wailing about how they so totally fail and are having to abandon fic because they cannot work out how to get a slash scene or a shipping scene into it. Its not compulsory guys.

I blame n00bs. They've grasped the idea that shipping is part of the fanscene, but so many of them aren't bright enough or old enough when they start using the net to realize that it isn't the whole of it, so they go on a crazed shipping rampage; searching out stuff to ship and slash so they can feel part of the scene.

This isn't my experience at all. I think it really depends what communities or fandoms you've been in.
also 10 years ago people warned for slash content, even non-explicit stuff, so maybe part of what you're seeing is the same proportion of people just being a little (a lot?) louder :)

Like the other anons have said, I think it depends on which fandoms you follow. In all the ones I've mainly been apart of, it was het that was on the sidelines and slash that always dominated. I like both so I won either way.

Not really, it just depends on which fandom - or part of fandom - you're talking about. For instance, at approximately the same time of the POTC fandom heyday it was also the heyday of the Stargate Atlantis fandom, which despite having a large cast featuring strong women still managed to revolve largely around one main slash ship.

um... idts. 10 years ago Harry Potter fandom was at its peak. Do the equation.
