That depends on how you view Murasaki, doesn't it? He did care for her, and even if it wasn't in a healthy or traditional way, she was never his plaything. Or would you say Hannibal stopped caring about people after her?

I did get that impression that Hannibal stopped caring for people after Murasaki. Except for Clarice, and I'm not yet convinced he feels that way with Will. Maybe he does, I just haven't seen it yet.

I haven't read Hannibal Rising, which is where my google-fu tells me Murasaki is from. I am basing this pretty much on the show (and to a lesser extent Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, but I read both of those back in the very early 90's, when I was in high school, so my memories of them are hazy).

But even so, I'd go with "it wasn't in a healthy or traditional way", because a lot of what I have seen for Hannibal/Will seems to try to make it a healthy/traditional relationship, which bothers me.

I guess it depends on the fics/circles you're in. Most of the fans I engage with happily admit it's fucked up.

Murasaki was Hannibal's aunt. He was infatuated with her, and she cared for him, but she pretty much knew what he was and tried to keep her distance while still protecting him. At one point (in the book) she invited him to be with her, thought mostly just to keep him from murdering a bunch of people, which didn't work because he chose revenge over her.

I feel like the relationship between Hannibal and Bedelia in the show is what his and Murasaki's relationship would be like, if she was still in his life. She may not be show canon, but I feel like it's just a matter of time, since Fuller has already mentioned wanting to cast Hannibal's uncle, Robert.

I'm really interested to see if they include her in the present day, because that would answer a major question about just how much Hannibal is able to care for other people.

I try not to frequent Hannibal/Will much because it really bothers me, especially after the encephalitis stuff (I marathoned the entire show in a couple of days, so I didn't really have time to appreciate any possibilities for that relationship before I was too upset by the hiding of the illness), so perhaps my reading of summaries and kink meme prompts is flawed/skewed, as I am not seeking it out. But when I was looking for other pairings, I caught a lot of "normal" Will/Hannibal stories. Some were AU, some were not. But in any event, there were a lot that I saw that tried to treat the relationship as not at all fucked up. And it really bothered me.

Hannibal Rising? What's that?

*covers ears and ignores anything whatsoever to do that abomination of a book/film*

Haha, I don't blame you. But then, if anyone can take that mess and make something worthwhile out of it, it's Fuller, right?
