This; I mean, to be fair there's a lot of people in the SF fandom that JUST want Hard SF where everything's explained and firmly based in science. But if you're writing fanfic for a sci-fi fandom, write what you want.

There are those people, yeah. But I see no reason to let them define what the entirety of SF is. Write what you want, not just for fanfic, but at all times. Read and write whatever kind of science fiction you want, because as far as I can tell, no one died and made those people the kings of science fiction.

Exactly. :) I personally like more character-driven fantasy and sci-fi, and don't care too much for hard SF. Like what you like, write what you like.
