For real. Frankly I think it was irresponsible of him to take the part-- Sure, dude has to make money, but it's not like he's having troubles making ends meet. He's going to end up typecast and he's only going to have himself to blame...

Sad thing is, I think Depp took this role to get away from Sparrow. Then the make and costume director turned up with *that* look and Verbinski started telling him to play it like this, and bam, here we are. I guess either the money was too good, or his contract was too ironclad.

I agree with anon lower down the thread, he needs to get out and do a few indie flicks, maybe something European, to get his mojo back. Something like Bill Murray did with Lost in Translation.

Depp was given control over the character design of Tonto

Pretty sure the make-up and look was Depp's idea, much as it has been for all his movies since PotC. You can't really force someone with his clout to wear something against their will.

Oh. Well in that case I'm out of excuses. That was a stupid thing for him to do. I guess he's way more hung up on that whole "I'ma realla parta injun" kick of his than I thought.
