Cursed With Awesome

After yesterday's blessed with suck thread, I'd figure I'd make one for the other side: What traits/experiences/whatever do you have that people think are generally not good but you think are pretty friggin' neat?

I'll start: about 75% of the time, when I tell people that my mother threw me out and excommunicated me, I get a lot of "Oh, that's horrible!"/"That must suck!" But really? It's the best thing that ever happened to me. She was the major source of my depression, and without her having done what she did, I might have never met my current (really awesome) partner.

I'm just so happy I don't have to deal with her anymore. (And most people tend to understand my stance on this once I mention that she once told me she wished I'd been abducted by aliens.)

I'm kinda like that about both of my parents being dead. Obviously there is some serious emotional downside to this, but I see so many people in their 20s having this weird emotional tug-of-war where their parents don't want them to grow up, or where they aren't growing up because they're still content to rely on their parents either practically or emotionally. I missed so much drama and I don't have to rely on anyone. I've also had more chance to come to terms with mortality than most people my age.

/obvious anon, as I don't know of any other orphans on FS? I'm sure there's some out there.

Despite being financially dependent on my mom, I get you on being not-entirely-devastated about dead parents, because when my dad died my first reaction was a big grin and a 'finally.' I will be devastated when my mom dies, though, since she's pretty much the only other person who lived through and understands the horror that was a nuclear family that included my dad.

ayrt

yeah, I miss one of them but not the other one, and it's the one I miss that's been dead far longer. At this point, it's like, I've BEEN devastated, I got through it, nothing else is ever going to be that shitty ever again so come at me! etc.

I'm sorry for what you went through. Hell is too good for some parents.

...now I'm trying to remember how I used to answer the "List one of your strengths/one of your weaknesses" question in job interviews....I am stubborn which is definitely not a good trait, but I try to balance it out by using my perseverance to think through a "third option" solution or a different way to get out of whatever jam I find myself in...

Being short. My feet don't hang off the bed, my husband feels nice and tall and comfy, I have an excuse to climb on pretty much whatever I want, I almost never have to duck under branched or things. It's also taught me how to navigate crowds really well.

Ditto. I'm like five feet tall, which sucks sometimes but can be so damn useful too. Haha.

I have to say, yes, the not having to duck thing is one of the best things about being short.

...my gesticulations. Sometimes when I imaginative, I would say the words and phrases that come from my mind. Adding to this is that I would sometimes move my arms according to what I'm imagining (say, pointing at something).

I usually don't do this in public.

Being bluntly honest. Sometimes, it comes off as rude but.. sometimes you HAVE to be? Related, it helps me not take shit from people if I don't have to.

My autism. People tend to think autism is horrible and debilitating, but to me it's an entirely different way of thinking that happens to come with side effects.

I am mind-numbingly dull, introverted, asocial, addicted to routine, and risk-averse. This has saved me no end of trouble, money, embarrassment, premature aging, and health problems that are very common among people my age.
