you got it kinda backwards there OP its more that his success with POTC has got him typecast as a weird quirky guy like Jim Carrey in the 90's. And much like Jim Carrey in the 90's people start to get sick of it, and it becomes more annoying than entertaining.

All the American Indian controversy and poor script are just icing on the cake.

As a side note I could have sworn I remember in the original draft for this movie, the lone ranger was going to be a werewolf or something, did I just hallucinate that or what?

The American Indian controversy isn't really something the general movie going public is aware of, either. It got a mention here or there on the news channels, but mostly it was confined to the internet. A lot of people read the news online but it's mostly just to check headlines and the average American reads less than 5 articles a day online.
