I hadn't thought about it that way before, but that explanation makes a lot of sense. Also, icon love.

That is honestly how I see everything in FFXIII. I mean, JRPGs are conventionally about a group of misfits who meet and become instant bffs and go on a quest together to save the world! and this lot are p. much trying to hate each other to death and don't know what their quest even is, or, for the most part, care. Vanille is a Manic Pixie Dream Girlfriend played for horribleness (plus, lesbian, plus, she is kindof expected to be a white mage healer chick but her main class is actually Saboteur); this is Lightning - she was supposedly girl!Cloud but is actualfax girl!Sephiroth, at least early-on; Snow/Serah is set up as some kind of big central romance but is just barely in at either end of the story and the real central romance is Fang/Vanille; Cocoon is a fake game world that only exists so you can level up in it, and for some reason that makes gamers mad. so yeah i think Final Fantasy XIII is a blistering, life-affirming ball of meta-hate and I am sad it's so underappreciated in that regard.

*snerk* I very much like your interpretation of the game. I did like a lot of the deconstructions of the genre that you mentioned, especially with the party characters - what, you mean the flighty ditz might be putting on an act to deal with all the horrible shit she pulled? And the tough macho chick ended up ruining lives thanks to her hot-headed assholiness? - and honestly think the game would have been better if they actually STUCK to that and gave them character arcs that would turn them into actual better people. Problem is they also wanted a triumphant 'power of friendship' deus ex machina ending, so the entire thing fell flat.

Yeah, my overall feeling was that half the dev team had missed the awesomeness memo :(

ENDING SPOILEEEERS

Yeah, it really was a game pulling in all directions. Now, you CAN have a deconstruction but also have a triumphant ending, but you need to know what you're doing. The ending to FF13 was just terrible in general though (and I'm not just saying that because the most awesome character got turned into crystal).
thene: Fang, with her back turned. Fate is not kind to those who leap. (oerba yun fang)

... WOW. That had not even occured to me.

Not to mention that the lesbian pair were the only two 'killed' at the end of FF13. Nice job, Square Enix.

Well apparently many of them Get Better in XIII-3, but still.
