It was the first musical in modern times to be a straight-up MUSICAL (no coveres of pop songs like moulin rouge, no pussy-footing around with dream sequences like Chicago).

Dear god, I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. Dude, I already know that people don't randomly burst into music-and-dance numbers IRL, stop having characters break the fourth wall to make the same goddamn observation. I'm perfectly capable of suspending disbelief, thank you very much, so why the hell can't the average audience do the same with musicals? Now get back singing!
