Inspired by the mentions of FF13 above, there are a LOT of shitty main characters in the FF series.

Squall from FF8? Controlling him meant listening to his whiny emo internal monologues about how people always let you down and trust leads to hurt and WAUGH WHAT IS THIS THING YOU CALL LOVE. Goddamn every other character in the party is actually more MATURE than Squall, which is terrifying when you consider everyone automatically turns to him in a crisis.

Tidus from FF10? Annoying douchebag who shakes his tiny impotent fist at his father while Yuna actually does everything needed to save the world. Watching him run slipshod over everything is just embarrassing to watch.

Vaan from FF12? HE ACTUALLY SAYS HE HAS NO PURPOSE IN THE STORY. There is literally no reason for him to come along and yet he has better stats than veterans and master thieves. Even Reks, his older brother (whom you play in the prologue) actually has a motivation and a cause to fight for, and I truly think the game would be much better if Reks had been the main character instead. (Seriously I could write an essay on this.)

I only played one Final Fantasy game. And I don't even know which one. It had a blonde dude and was for the Playstation.

Hmm, if it was just the original Playstation, then it was either FF7 with Cloud or FF9 with Zidane. Did the guy have a huge sword and spiky hair or was it a guy with a tail wielding daggers? Cloud's the former, Zidane's the latter.

Pretty sure a huge sword. And a lot of it was walking around some kind of industrialized zone.

That would be FF7, and luckily a game with a good main character.

It's on Steam right now, if you're interested in playing it again.

Oh, and one extra character I forgot:

Lightning from FF13? Goddamn, she just spent the entire game in angry surly grumpy-cat mode. Which would be just bearable for one game, but they've spent all the sequels goddamn deifying her into some warrior queen even though she was just a fucking sergeant in a security force that had never been to war in her lifetime. She was a glorified security guard, but now she's like the fucking goddess of war? Fucking come on now.
