You do realize that you don't need to ship Uhura at all right? She doesn't need to be in a relationship with someone else in order to not be in a relationship with Spock.

I understand them though. Pairing her with another character has the advantage that it gets rid of her completely and they fix any possibility that she could get back with Spock. They don't want to get called Uhura haters either for making the character alone again and get back to tos when Nichelle Nichols said that tptb wanted a spock/uhura thing but racism was a bigger thing in the 60s.
