Shipping Scotty/Uhura is a good way to avoid the "you just hate vaginas!" accusation, while still being able to ship your actual pairing.

That's just it. That's just it, you just hit the nail square on the head. It's so common for Kirk/Spock shippers to get dogpiled by assholes screaming about anti-feminist sentiment and that we're all hateful and sexist and racist, when the majority of us just...happen to like one ship more than another? I love Uhura, and so do most people that I know, but I don't actually ship her with anyone. But, just to avoid the backlash, I (among many others, I'm sure!) have "backup" ships involving her. I hate that I feel like I have to do that, because I don't actually think they're good matches, but it's the only way I can see to dodge the vitriol.

It's a nonsense, though.
Do you realize that it actually makes you look worse?
Because if you guys say that Spock/Uhura is anti feminist and bad for her character and offensive and other cute things spirk fans always say about that ship ~because of reasons and then you proceed to ship her with Scotty ignoring the whole Sybok shit from TFF - that is fucking offensive for Uhura - and the fact that they don't interact in the reboot and he's pretty much married to Kenser, Kirk and the enterprise, it makes you look like a tad hypocritical and as someone who doesn't give a damn about Uhura.
I'm sorry but I've read some of the arguments over tumblr and no wonder why Uhura fans might think that people have latent racial issues with this character. No, I don't think that the spirk fans are racist but I can see why some of the things they say sound like that because they're fucking contradictory in their attempt to prove that there is no bias in their arguments and they dislike S/U because they love Uhura too much.
It's not a wonder that feminists are getting a bad reputation because of the slash fans lately.
