It had one obvious point that your friend was unequipped to recognize: continuity with a prequel that she hadn't watched. I don't think that viewers of nu!Trek necessarily have to be conversant with all of Stark Trek, but if they haven't even watched the film that establishes the setting, the main characters, and their interrelationships, then they have to expect that they might be confused by a few things.
