Jack is former black-ops; he's been a prisoner of war. He's often cynical and jaded. He lost his child to a gun accident in the home; he hadn't secured his weapon. Daniel wants to be friends with everyone. I wouldn't say he's naive, but he's certainly idealistic. It makes for a really interesting pairing dynamic in fic.

I have only scratched the surface of J/D ship fic and am not qualified to make sweeping generalizations about it, but I think that as the series progressed, some writers did start to write Daniel more like original flavor Jack--certainly with more darkness than initially. I think that because Daniel was the fandom woobie, though, a lot of writers continued to emphasize his idealism.

I've been in some really weird, unfortunate situations, and while I'm sometimes frustrated by her naivete, she's so damn smart and willing to learn and adapt, that I can't help but value her and love her for who she is.
She balances me out and makes me look at things in a better light,

I didn't understand their relationship on an emotional level until now.
My age, experience and prowess fascinate you--I have been places, seen things, done things that astound you.
I am one of those people who is willing to go bad places, and do bad things in the hope that it will make things better in the long run. I am as broken as you are sheltered.
I wonder some times, many times, why you love and care for me, and admire me, the way you do.
I wonder, if you would love me the way you do, if you knew who I really was and what I am capable of doing.
I wonder if you would leave me.
Your idealism, innocence, and naiveté are baffling and endearing to me.
You are brilliant, unguided and awkward, and you show me that there are still some people in the world who are still relatively untouched by ugliness and disaster.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 02:23 am (UTC)(link)and they do make a lot more sense than Snake/Raiden...OP
(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 02:39 am (UTC)(link)And I guess it helped me understand the emotional bond between the two of them more, because I have it irl, too. We're not "in love", but we love each other, and... yeah, she has my back pretty much the whole way.

I absolutely love this ship for all the reasons you listed, OP >>;; But remember Otacon does know trauma and pain. It's kind of weird, even, that you use that particular pic to speak of "people untouched by ugliness and disaster", because they do the secret handshake and hug after a particularly ugly part of Otacon's pain gets revealed. It's not criticism, I'm just noticing it.
