I don't know who the characters are in this secret, but this reminds me of the way that Jack/Daniel are often written in fic for SG-1.

Jack is former black-ops; he's been a prisoner of war. He's often cynical and jaded. He lost his child to a gun accident in the home; he hadn't secured his weapon. Daniel wants to be friends with everyone. I wouldn't say he's naive, but he's certainly idealistic. It makes for a really interesting pairing dynamic in fic.

Solid Snake and Otacon from Metal Gear Solid are the ones in the secret. ;) The series is filled with a bunch of WTFery that's hard to explain, but as far as these two goes, Snake is the older jaded one and Otacon is the younger, idealistic one. I don't ship them but they're probably the series' most popular pairing. And their ingame bromance is epic.

I always wondered how J/D shippers handled Danny's character development over the course of the series. Like, bless his heart, his idealism and enthusiasm got kinda pounded into the ground, understandably given all the shit they went through, but by the end of the series he was way way more like original-flavor Jack than he had been at the start.

*nods nods nods*

I have only scratched the surface of J/D ship fic and am not qualified to make sweeping generalizations about it, but I think that as the series progressed, some writers did start to write Daniel more like original flavor Jack--certainly with more darkness than initially. I think that because Daniel was the fandom woobie, though, a lot of writers continued to emphasize his idealism.

Interesting-- thanks for the comparison, I'll be looking into this.

TBH, it makes an interesting combination irl, too. I've been in some really weird, unfortunate situations, and while I'm sometimes frustrated by her naivete, she's so damn smart and willing to learn and adapt, that I can't help but value her and love her for who she is.

She balances me out and makes me look at things in a better light,

I'm so glad you found someone to balance you. In my experience, that's the key to a successful relationship. My husband and I balance each other in different ways than you and your partner, but that balance is the backbone of our marriage. :)

Prowess is one of those words I can't take seriously. I exploded into giggles because I suck.

ship this though. you are very lucky i think too.

Hahaha you do suck, you got me grinning too.

I am lucky. It's better than I deserve. I always expected to be alone.

[Picture is Otacon and Solid Snake from the videogame Metal Gear Solid doing a handshake or greeting of sorts. Snake is wearing a fighting garb of sorts. Otacon is wearing a lab coat and eyeglasses. They both have dark hair and pale skin.]

I didn't understand their relationship on an emotional level until now.
My age, experience and prowess fascinate you--I have been places, seen things, done things that astound you.
I am one of those people who is willing to go bad places, and do bad things in the hope that it will make things better in the long run. I am as broken as you are sheltered.
I wonder some times, many times, why you love and care for me, and admire me, the way you do.
I wonder, if you would love me the way you do, if you knew who I really was and what I am capable of doing.
I wonder if you would leave me.
Your idealism, innocence, and naiveté are baffling and endearing to me.
You are brilliant, unguided and awkward, and you show me that there are still some people in the world who are still relatively untouched by ugliness and disaster.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not that it really matters, but Snake is wearing a Navy SEAL uniform, and the video game is Metal Gear Solid 2. Keep up the good work, btw :)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-07-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, thank you!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I must be the only one in the MG fandom that doesn't ship these two. I still appreciate the hell out of their bromance though. and they do make a lot more sense than Snake/Raiden...

OP

Strangely enough, I don't actually ship them per se, either. I just found some eerily mirrored dynamics between myself and my friend (who has something of a puppy love/worship crush on me).

And I guess it helped me understand the emotional bond between the two of them more, because I have it irl, too. We're not "in love", but we love each other, and... yeah, she has my back pretty much the whole way.

Oh whoops. I admit my comment was mostly inspired by the ones above. I see what you mean though! I find it an interesting dynamic, romantic relationship or not. It's like a specific example of opposites attract? It's possible she admires the things you've been through and done, even if she may not entirely understand or relate. The way you talk, I don't think she'd leave you that easily, OP!

I don't ship it but I do regard it as a canon pairing. Will that do?

Disclaimer: I'm not shipping you with your friend, OP!

I absolutely love this ship for all the reasons you listed, OP >>;; But remember Otacon does know trauma and pain. It's kind of weird, even, that you use that particular pic to speak of "people untouched by ugliness and disaster", because they do the secret handshake and hug after a particularly ugly part of Otacon's pain gets revealed. It's not criticism, I'm just noticing it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship them because I don't like very much Otacon tbh (must be his dubber's fault, most of everything else, though), but JESUS, the new trailers for the new game. That sure looks like ridiculous, realistic looking shipping material. I'm already torn between Miller/Big Boss, Miller/Ocelot, and clearly Ocelot/Big Boss (which is absolutely canon me thinks). XD

Sorry if I went a bit OT on the secret.
