Sometimes, especially when people are just roundly nasty to everyone around them and never seem to suffer the consequences, it's really hard not to be a bit smug when all that nastiness finally comes back to bit them in the ass. As you say, though, I think this all depends on the offense. Being glad that the person who cut you off in traffic dies of cancer? Totally not cool. Being glad that the person who threatened your job security is removed from a position of power? Understandable.

I totally agree with this distinction. Someone who abuses power shouldn't be in it, and there's also that element of getting a bit of what they dished out. There's nothing wrong with being happy about that imo. It's sort of making things right - making sure that people understand how hurtful they were, that's what I care about; making sure they know what they did. Because it pisses me off when people *don't* get it, when they have no concept of the effects of their actions. And also being glad that they're removed from a position of power that they can't handle responsibly, for the sake of other people who might be in the same position as you were.
