Born of experience first with my brother and then my mom and then my boyfriend and most of the people I knew before I got clean and literally moved across the world to cut myself off from that lifestyle. Drug abuse is still around me all the time but it isn't connected to me anymore. I'm the luckiest person in my family and by lucky I mean I'm the only one who is still alive and likely to stay that way because it's frankly miraculous that no one has called me and told me my sister OD-ed yet.

Are you the anon I replied to? Because YOU are pretty much the person I'm talking about when that anon says addicts are destined for death by overdose.

Yes I am. And yes some of us survive and it's great when we do and I'm proud of myself. But mine is the average or norm or whatever and I was resuscitated two times I can remember because I overdosed. Because that is what addict do.

I've had family members that died from ODing. It will eventually happen. It's tragic, but they need to STICK to being clean. It's always just one hit away.

Except it isn't? I agree this whole thread is needlessly harsh, but addicts OD all the time. It's heartbreaking but not uncommon and certainly not shocking.

Yes, it happens more often than it should, but let's not pretend death by overdose is an inevitability for every addict everywhere. It's incredibly disrespectful to those who have maintained their recovery.
