She was, in my estimation, part of the reason Superman begins to trust humans not to be assholes. She helped Jor-El to help Kal-El and she gave Kal-El the information needed to save the world from the aliens.

More importantly she has more plot relevance than Nathan Hardy and Perry White and yet I'm still waiting for the secrets that tear down their (non)contributions to the movie.
