I want evil and hate and douchey behavior to go away, not persist. I don't like it when people are miserable. If someone who is good at making people miserable learns to not be good at it, the world has become a better place. I'm not saying they deserve a gold star, because they did the right thing and what was expected of them, not some heroic above-and-beyond thing, but they did do the right thing and they are no longer sowing seeds of misery into the world like they were before...are you?
People who learn that there is forgiveness on the other side might become better people. People who learn that there is no way to escape from their past mistakes, that the world will always judge and hate them...it's basically saying that we, as imperfect people, are not allowed to make mistakes, because we've damned ourselves in the eyes of others forever. I just don't see how that can be construed as a good thing.
