sort of getting a taste of their own medicine thing

Yes, it is this exactly. Sorry, I know the term but it isn't a common one where I live. That was what I meant by "things go wrong for them because of stuff they say or do" in my original comment. I need to brush up on my English :)

I can just see where OP is coming from. Fandom is a mostly harmless place but it isn't harmless. And there have been more than a couple instances in fandom that have made mainstream news because of things someone did in fandom that hurt others. There are many more instances that don't get mainstream media attention of people doing truly awful stuff and there's rarely any recourse for the victims. So it never surprises me when others are glad about someone getting a taste of their own medicine and I don't judge these people harshly. I'm more likely to wonder what the other person did to cause such a reaction because usually there is a reason beyond someone just getting pleasure from someone else's misery.

And I just realized that I made an unintentional Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference there :)

Yeah, that makes sense. I think there is a world of difference between "I'm glad you got to experience what you've been inflicting on others for a change" and "I'm glad you're miserable because it makes me happy and I wish more bad things upon you".
