Media with a big Show vs Tell disparity?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
IDK how to best phrase this, but what are the things that most contradict themselves?

For example, Glee. Glee in general (because it doesn't know if it's a Very Special drama or a black comedy or a broad comedy and the various tones tend to sabotage each other) but specifically Will, who according to character descriptions and such is supposed to be this great inspiring teacher and nice guy, but is often written and/or portrayed as an incompetent asshole.

(inspired by secret #13 reminding me how different Tony is in-universe and in most of the actual episodes)

Twilight.

Bella is clumsy! > only when it's convenient
Bella is selfless! > only so she can complain about it
Bella is in love! > only wants Edward so he can turn her

Not even scratching the surface of all the contradictions in those books. Uhg.

Yes, this is why I never could get into Twilight. We're told over and over about how selfless Bella is, and especially about how she's the responsible one, the caretaker, the grown-up, in her relationship with Renee. But she's so busy feeling sorry for herself and condescending to the whole of Forks--even though everybody but the Cullens has bent over backwards to be nice to her--that for forty-eight hours after she arrives, she forgets to so much as call her mom or email her to say she arrived safely. Seriously, who even does that?

A lot of those shows or games where you have this one character everyone goes on and on about being so strong and so great and then... people wipe the floor with them without breaking a sweat.
