I don't read Superman comics and gave up on Smallville long before Lois appeared, but I know she has gone through many different iterations. And FWIW, I thought she was great in Man of Steel. I know some people complained that in the later parts of the movie (when shit really started to hit the fan) she didn't do anything, but I think any mere mortal would react the same way.
