It's not a matter of choice, really. If you're a reader, sheer chance will almost inevitably lead you to reading some really terrible stuff. I once read an entire biography of the Judds for instance, because that was literally the only book my grandparents owned and I was stuck at their house. (Not that the Judd biography was that bad, but it's definitely the last thing I would choose to read).

Requirements for school, work, being stuck in an airport, curiousity about adaptation quality, curiosity about hype, genre, concepts that are too intriguing to pass up but very poorly executed... all will lead one down the path to reading some terrible books.
