I'm not sure why anyone would write original fic for a website like AO3.

What's to not get? I assume they just want it to be available on the same site as their fanfic, so people who like their fanfics can also click on their original fics and vice versa.

Do you think people would only ever make original work for money, or in the hope of money? Because that's a weird belief.
