ahh, right on, I'm not much of a visual kei person but I can definitely appreciate it (the girl in my icon, Ishikawa Rika, was briefly in a visual kei group.)

Let's see, what I know now is pretty much just female idol groups, so if that's not something you want to care about (and I don't blame you) just a disclaimer.

Babymetal - if you like more metal/rock oriented music, Babymetal's a pretty good gateway into idol pop. The three girls involved are part of another group, Sakura Gakuin, but Babymetal's really taken off in popularity recently. I really like their fusion of metal, pop and their most recent single Megitsune incorporates traditional sounds in there.

Momoiro Clover Z and Team Syachihoko - My favorite group out there right now is Team Syachihoko, who are best known as a sister group to Momoiro Clover Z. Momoiro Clover Z started out as Momoiro Clover, but added the Z when a member (Akari who was amazing) left. They always have really interesting music videos, usually good music, and are a lot of fun. They're pretty popular right now. Team Syachihoko is their sister group from Nagoya who are basically like a more indie MomoClo.

Dempagumi.inc - they're still fairly lesser known, but they're getting up there. They're a fairly eccentric group, with one of their claims to fame being that they were all hikkikomori or at the very least serious otaku before joining the group. But they're a lot of fun.

If you are following contemporary JPop, you should probably know some AKB48. They're a huge pop group with sister groups SKE48, NMB48 and HKT48. They're pretty divisive (in that they're loved by many and hated by many), but have SO MUCH music that it's impossible to hate everything they do. I personally like a lot of what they do, and while I really disliked what they've put out so far this year, I really love what I've heard of their next single, Koisuru Fortune Cookie.
