Re: I really should go anon for this, but the heck with it...
(Anonymous) 2013-07-17 04:16 am (UTC)(link)Exactly. I've always likened it to an alternate world where Christianity was a small, little-known subculture and EL James was actually legitimately convincing people that the Christian god was three-headed and demanded the sacrifice of a human infant every Good Friday (since babies are innocent, doncha know).
*I'm aware that BDSM is not a religion. However, I am very much a sub, and it is just as integral a part of me as, presumably, a belief in God would be to a Christian.
Re: I really should go anon for this, but the heck with it...
Right! It's not just being misrepresented ("Oh, you're a Poker fan? I know what you get up to- I read Fifty Spades of Gray, I know how you cheat at cards all the time and kick your opponents under the table. Oh well, to each their own") but also because we've got people thinking it's the norm of the subculture ("Hey, my poker dealer is hiding cards in his sleeve, but according to Fifty Spades, it's fine, it's how it works in poker.") and most annoyingly of all, preachy asshat one-book-experts who think they're oh so subversive ("I wish people would stop criticizing me for loving Fifty Spades. They do it because they're just fun police and are boring. They know they secretly want to play cards.*")
*That one came from an actual fan of the book. There isn't enough Sit the Eff down and Shut the Eff Up in the world for that link.
