"Mundanes" is the "Muggles" of The Mortal Instrument series, it just means a person not aware of or engaged in the magical/mystical/superpowered goings-on of the series proper.

Yes, I'm aware of its use in The Mortal Instruments, but do you really think Cassie Clare invented it? Plus, I thought it was pretty clear that a lot of the Shadowhunters regarded the people they ostensibly protect with thinly veiled contempt.

I'm pretty sure its use by Society for Creative Anachronism members long pre-dates those books.
