When I was a kid my uncle gave me an America's Cup hat for the New Zealand team. Must have been in 2000 when we won. Anyway I wore that hat for MONTHS. First thing on my head when I woke up, and last thing I took off at night. Like, I'd be sitting in bed in my pyjamas reading with that hat on and only take it off when I actually went to sleep.

That is the closest I've ever come to giving a toss about the America's Cup, and you'll notice it was much more about hats than yachts. I would wager a large number of my friends don't even know what the America's Cup is, or when it's on. In fact, I don't even know when it's on. This is probably a large part of the reason there isn't a good fandom.
