Yeah, Superman standing on a pile of skulls that is hinting they belong to his victims is not kosher. Creepy? Yes. Kosher for Superman? No.

Whatever happened to the Superman that went around the US in the Grounded storyline? I like Superman. Can we have him back? Only in Grant Morrison's design. I am digging the shirt and jeans, working class Superman look.

If they'd made working-class Superman's look the new, official look, I'd totally be on board with him. To me, that's the REAL Superman. That's what modern superheroes should look like!

Wow, someone's bitter. Personally I just wish they'd bring Stephanie Brown back, she was legit.

Also, the whole "melancholy alone amongst aliens" thing existed well before New 52, but you knew that. ... Didn't you?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I've always felt that story worked better for Martian Manhunter than it did for Superman - in part because Superman has always felt much more at home in the human world to me than J'onn J'onzz does (compare the way they present themselves to the world - Superman is an impossibly perfect, handsome human specimen, Manhunter is a weird green freak. compare their jobs - I mean, I think the concept of feeling like an outcast/exile/stranger has always been a huge part of the topos of the private eye, even when the private eye is not actually an alien, whereas I would argue that being a newspaper reporter is much more integrated into human society. and ofc compare their personal relationships to humans).

So it never really rang true for me to think of Superman as a melancholy alien because that's not really the way he's presented, in comparison to Manhunter. And in a lot of ways, the two characters are extremely similar in their origin and concept, so the contrast between that element is all the more striking.

Sure, Superman had his 'melancholy alone' alien moments before, but it's just really been multiplied by ten in the New 52 and The Man of Steel movie. I mean, in the New 52 Jonathan and Martha Kent are already dead. Compare that to the old continuity where Smallville was his safe haven, he always had the support of his earth parents, and he was married to a human woman, and he had the trust of the public and the government.

Urg it really annoys we that we keep having this story. Yes superman could take over the world or accidently break everything. We know that. Please just have superman being sweet and awesome

I love sweet and awesome Superman. Especially sweet and awesome Clark Kent. I like the guy who was raised by a kind midwest couple to be a good, honest, hardworking person who looks out for people who need it.

The comics rarely explore that side of Superman. It's always Kal-El, super powered alien in a human world. I just want a day in the life of Clark Kent storyline.

If you don't mind that it's from pre-52 continuity, I recommend Kurt Busiek's Up, Up and Away. It features a de-powered Superman who's just been living soley as Clark Kent for year.

I'm not even much of a comic book reader and this annoys me. (I've just absorbed a lot of knowledge about comics for some reason.)

Angsty superheroes gets boring, and not everyone can do it well.
With an idealistic character like Superman, it just feels... idk, like they're trying to mold the character in a way that doesn't fit, just because they think it would be cool and sell action figures.

"Hey kids, Superman isn't a pussy anymore, he's totally badass. Look how edgy he is now! Skulls and death and fire! Needs more pouches and machine guns!

Sounds like that comic where he grew a beard and fought twin clones of Hitler. (Apparently, it's where Linkara got his catchphrase "I am a man!"

spoilers for Injustice: Gods Among Us and Man of Steel

[Picture is a collectible figurine of Superman wearing a gray version of his outfit standing over some human skulls.]

I was already pissed at them for the whole 'New 52' melancholy alien alone amongst human characterisation... Then came 'Injustice: Gods Among Us', in which we're supposed to buy that he would ruthlessly slaughter the Joker before taking control of the Earth "for our own good"... Followed by the absolute travesty that was 'Man of Steel' in which MILLIONS of innocents die because he can't be arsed to stop punching Zod long enough to save them (to say nothing of his 'snap decision' in the last act...) But it was with this OFFICIALLY LICENSED STATUE that DC finally lost me, after 30 years.

FUCK YOU, DC. YOU DON'T DESERVE HIM ANYMORE. HE'D BE BETTER OFF IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN THAN WITH YOU IDIOTS.

I agree, although I was never that passionate about Superman or even liked him that much.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
It would be really hard to balance on skulls like that.

I'm with you OP. The Superman DC is promoting and writing right now just feels so different from the Superman I know and love. DC seems to have forgotten that it's Superman's personality that makes him such a great character, not his superpowers.

cf. the Sentry.

Aren't the skulls a reference to the vision Zodd gave him, of what would happen if Superman didn't save the day? They're not 'the skulls of his victims', as someone said upthread, but the result he was fighting to avoid.

(I'm not so much with comic mythos, and there were still plenty of ways for people to actually die in the movie, but yeah, that's how i'd interpret that figurine at least).

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's absolutely a callback to the dream sequence, yeah, but Superman doesn't exactly look concerned or horrified at the prospect here, as he does in the movie. The pose and the expression on his face are all wrong. Taken out of context, it really does look like he's content standing on the remains of a lotta dead people.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I ragequit it at the New 52. Man of Steel is the first thing I've watched/read/seen of Superman since then. Give me my "Grounded" Superman.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not anti-DC by far but I totally understand, OP. I might feel the same way if I didn't dislike Superman already. I'm in the he's-too-powerful-and-too-goodie-goodie camp, but I think he should be respected for those who love him as the embodiment of righteousness. That's what he was meant to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, the Superman I love is a sweetheart who is a total boy scout who loves humanity. He was raised by two kind-hearted people who always raised him as a human and he considers 'Clark Kent' the real him more-so than Superman.

The whole appeal of Superman to me is like what Batman said... Clark is really this powerful god-like being, and yet he never thinks of himself like that even for a second. He just sees his powers as something he can use to help other people with.

Even though Injustice was a parallel world that version of Superman never sat right with me. The idea that he would abuse his power for any reason is insulting to the character.
