I ask you, what are some things where you live that scream, "WINTER/SUMMER?"

For me, nothing reminds me of Summer more than cicadas "singing." When that loud, machine hum starts wailing, I know I'm knee deep into Summer. That and I know there is no chance that I am going to catch a nap over that noise.

When the shaved ice places open. Mmmm Tiger's Blood.

The outdoor pools are open! Since the water's too cold to swim in, up here, it's as close as most people get.

It's really foggy and overcast all the time. Must be summer.

update: this thread is making me really miss living in a place where there's actual summer

Where are you that there isn't an actual Summer? Look behind you. Do you see penguins?

Oh man, that would be so awesome, if there were penguins just chilling around here.

Unfortunately, no. I just live in a place where the summer months is mostly chilly, windy, and overcast. because the weather here is weird. and I miss living in a place where it gets sunny and nice and beautiful in the summer. Because I like that, at least for a couple months.

Summer: Blackflies.

Winter: Ice storms.

The A&W root beer stand is only open during the summer. I fucking love it. I haven't been out there in years. Know what? I'ma drive out there next week for lunch.

We also get some truly gorgeous pink sunsets.

The heat, and the fact signs are up going 'IT'S HURRICANE SEASON! BE PREPARED!'

Oh, joy hurricane season. Or my favorite, SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EVERY NIGHT! I am getting so used to the warning scrolls on my television that the screen looks empty without them.

Ugh, hurricanes are the bane of my existence. Well, not so much hurricanes themselves; I usually just take a pill and sleep through the whole thing just to keep myself from freaking out. It's the aftermath I hate so much. Weeks (or months) of cleanup, the oppressive heat and humidity that follow, and of course, the hordes of yellow jackets and water moccasins that seem to spring fully formed from the cursed earth to punish mankind for our sins.

When I see someone passed out from drinking last night, without their top on, and gone bright red on their back because of the sunburn, that is when I know it is summer in Glasgow.

90 degree heat
Band concerts in the park
The smell of linden flowers, and of phlox in my neighbors' gardens
Nighthawks circling high up in the sky and going "beeeeeent beeeeent" at dusk
Fireflies; cicadas
Red admiral butterflies patrolling the sidewalks; dragonflies over the lake

weheheh, I've played so much harvest moon during my lifetime that cicadas remind me strongly of summer too, and we don't even have any in my area. the small times I have heard them in rl I get all nostalgic and think, "AHHH the sound of summer" and think about pineapples.

bike week. it's really big around my area. one solid week of loud revving sounds and murderous traffic (and don't even think about trying to go to a coffee place), but I still love it because it's so familiar.

When I can hear ice cream trucks and barely tolerate wearing a top that's more than a tank tops and the idea of full length pants baffles me. Oh and when the sun sets super late and it's easy to mistake 6AM for midday.

I miss ice cream trucks!

They are banned here because 40+ years ago, a child was struck by a car while running out into the street after an ice cream truck. Several times, people have tried to get the ban revoked, but the parents of the child have always been able to rally enough supporters to make sure it stays in place.

When everyone's flipping their shit about it being HOT OMG IT'S HOT AND THERE'S SUN SO MUCH SUN AND IT'S SO FUCKING HOT AND WHO WOULD'VE THUNK IT, it's summer.

On a more positive note: when my daily thought is, "I wanna sit on a deck with a beer and a book," it's summer.
