Ugh. Is there an appeal process? Is your Dr willing to go through the red tape so you can get the meds you need?

I'm lucky. My insurance is covering the drugs at three times the formulary copay, and my current financial situation is such that I can afford it. But just... ugh.

I used to work as a CSR for a major medical insurance provider in the US. Check and see if your coverage allows for a step process in regards to drugs.

Basically, for those who don't know, the formulary covers the least expensive options for meds (older drugs, generics, etc) but not the newer, more expensive ones. Patient has had no success with the covered meds, dr prescribes something not covered, insurance rejects claim. Doctor contacts insurance and tells them "I have tried patient on drug x and drug y without success. Therefore the z option is patient's only recourse." Insurance with step method reviews claims and usually allows it at the premium copay.

I know from experience that this was the case with some private coverages and also with some states' Medicare/Medicaid programs (we handled their customer service and administration as well as several Medicare replacement products). I remember once dealing with our pharmacy dept over a $12,000 copay for a client. It got reduced through the step process: client did not respond to two courses of older or generic medicine, doctor showed need for more expensive drug, and co-pay was drastically reduced.

Another option is that the manufacturer of the non-covered medicine may offer assistance in meeting the cost of their drug. Seriously research the med you were scripted and check with the maker; some offer discounts on co-pays or subsidies to help defray the cost.

I hope that this helps you, Anon, or someone else who comes across it. Best wishes.
