OOPs, sorry OP.

Semi OT but I'd really like to know why so many comedy movies are such crap. I love comedy as a genre but I go into so many of them without laughing once, if I am lucky I will laugh a few times.

Like it's not even that hard to make me laugh, I just don't get why we make the same crappy comedy movies over and over again.

Because America is stupid enough to keep going to see the same thing over and over.

This is true, though it did stop me from going to see most comedy movies.

They make money.

Because critically they suck but often they are pretty funny. You don't go see a movie like Grown Ups for intelligence. You go for slaps, farts, and ball hitting.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But like I said, I don't ever find them funny? Like I have no problem seeing movies critics are not a fan of and I'm all for guilty pleasure entertainment, but I usually spend my time in those movies with my mouth closed.

I guess I don't care if they're made, I just wish there were more comedies for me? I love comedy, but I have a harder time finding a good comedy in movies then any other genre.

Humor is subjective. (Like I would pass on this movie. I prefer dark comedies.)

What are some comedies that you find funny?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
My sense of humor is actually kind of broad, the only thing I absolutely do not find funny ever is toilet humor, which may be part of the problem because that's big in comedy movies (I can deal with some toilet humor but if that's what the whole movie is then I walk away.)

I don't have a lot of movie examples, but I love Arrested Development, Community, The League, Happy Endings, and well, my television list would be pretty long.

For movies I'm always up for Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright. With other people it's very hit and miss, hell even the cast of Grown Ups 2 I've found funny at times (with the exception of James) but I don't think they've really done decent projects in years.

Sean of the Dead managed to make a fart joke touching. That is some true skill.

bit of a side note, but the description of this movie on Rotten Tomatoes:

"While it's almost certainly the movie event of the year for filmgoers passionate about deer urine humor, Grown Ups 2 will bore, annoy, and disgust audiences of nearly every other persuasion."

why yes I happen to be passionate about deer urine humor

All they need to get tickets sold is enough genuinely decent jokes to fill out the length of a trailer; once people are in the theaters it doesn't matter if they've already seen all the funny bits.

I think there was a Cracked article a while back pointing out that at least part of what makes comedies just Not As Good as they used to be is that most genre movies already DO the comedy thing themselves.

I mean, I'm sure some terrible "____ Movie IIVVVCV" type Avengers "parody" would be made, but what's the point when the movie already does parody itself at times? And for any other jokes, a small 30 second to five minute online sketch is all it really needs. So comedy has less to mock, since the whole point of a good comedy is to point out the absurd in a situation.

So we'll just replace "good comedy" with fart jokes, and, well...that's that.

I can see that. Sometimes I leave action movies having laughed more then at any comedy movie in the last year.

I also see a lot of comedy movies that have weak or just nonexistant storylines so if you're not laughing it's really hard to enjoy the film at all.
