Well, I don't recall a mecha anime where each mecha needs two pilots, or one where the effects of piloting single are actually addressed. Or where they explain the science. Or where the government actually shuts down the mecha-program and faces slack for it.

YMMV, but it is original for an action movie.

And it looks really nice and I think it's one of those movies you need to watch on a big cinema screen to really get a great experience... Maybe I'll suffer through the dub for that after all.

I would definitely suffer through the dub for this one.

If you ever see it in the original audio, though, I have been assured that the Chinese spoken in the movie is accurate and well-done.

DA

Just to play devil's advocate, because I did see the movie in theaters and I thought it was all-around terrific... I'm actually wondering if it's not going to look better on the small screen? All the clips I've seen on TV, be it Leno or Fallon or commercials, have looked so much more clear and vividly colored than I remembered in being in my theater. I'm excited to get the DVD to find out.

This reminds me of something that Ebert used to point out, that sometimes movie theatres will show the film underlit, because some of the bulbs are expensive, and so they skimp and let the equipment run with less bulbs than they should.

It's hard to know for sure, but when I watched one of the Harry Potter films, I was 100% certain the movie theatre was doing that. The night scenes were dark and murky and hard to see, and looked perfectly visible on DVD. Stupid cheap theatre.

Oh yeah! Del Toro does a fantastic job of conveying the overwhelming scale of the monsters, and it's definitely something that you should take the chance to enjoy on the big screen.
