I admit I've only been watching the anime (though I've been spoiled to death about the manga), but I personally like Levi more than most characters in the show. Regardless, I can see where you're coming from, OP, especially since he spends 99% of his time being/acting annoyed. The day he smiles is the day humans annihilate the Titans pigs fly. xD

Still, I think it's funny that he's supposedly 5'3'' (shorter than most of his comrades) and still known as humanity's most powerful soldier. And despite his obsession with cleanliness, which has spawned quite a bit of amusing fan stuff in and of itself, he still doesn't hesitate to reassuringly hold a dying soldier's bloody hand. Granted, moments like those are probably few and far between, but I still think it's endearing. And it doesn't hurt that I'm slowly growing to like shipping him with Hanji.

The smaller/leaner you are the better you are at 3D gear manoeuvring? Probably one of the reasons he's so good.

Ah, you're probably right! I'm sure there are other factors that play a role, but in general, I bet that the less mass you have, the more agile you'll be, and you'll likely want speed and control over raw strength when you're facing off against Titans, anyway. Though perhaps with the exception of Eren.
