You forgot to mention Idris Elba's excellent walking in a long coat.

I've watched the film twice so far, paying a lot of attention to Idris Elba both times, and I completely don't remember that part! Maybe it's so amazing that my brain blocked it out as a protective mechanism? :-)

And the subverted cliche at the end was one of the surprising plot points that I was thinking of. Also really interesting and unexpected was the timeline of the film: the way del Toro zipped through the origin story to get to the hard, grueling parts of the long war.
